Hello, and Merry Christmas!
Let’s talk about apple cider (ACV). It is a natural healer. A home remedy that has been reported as an aid in losing weight and in lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels, yet more research is needed according to experts, so these benefits may be of benefit to you or not. Studies were small and short-term. Of course, there are those who beg to differ who have used it and have had good results.
It is an excellent source of potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus (WebMD).
The darker the vinegar, the less refined it is. I recommend using organic apple cider vinegar, which is darker, cloudier, unpasteurized, and unfiltered keeping more of its nutrients. The cloudy sediment at the bottom of the bottle is what is referred to as “the mother,” which is rich in natural proteins, healthy bacteria, and acetic acid (increases metabolism, slows the digestion of carbohydrates, which reduces the rate at which sugars enter the bloodstream).
ACV may exacerbate the condition of stomach linings of those who have ulcers. Pregnant and breast-feeding women should use it sparingly. Those on insulin and other glucose lowering meds should monitor blood sugar levels closely if using ACV because of its lowering effect on blood sugar levels. Its continued use may interfere with certain medicines, so check with your doctor.
I suggest using one to two teaspoons with meals, or a tablespoon. There’s no harm in testing it out if you will get some benefit from its use. It’s been touted as a cure for aches and pains in the bathtub (add a cup or two to your bath water) and as a help to cure coughs and colds (1-2 teaspoons to a glass of water.)
It definitely kills bacteria and can be used as a gargle with a little salt and some water to chase away the germs.
ACV doesn’t provide the fiber or antioxidants like eating a whole apple does, even though it has a good amount of vitamins and minerals because of its fermentation.
It’s been used as a home remedy for arthritis, weight loss, aches and pains, coughs and colds, osteoporosis because of its boron content which helps to keep calcium and magnesium intact or inside without losing it, keeping bones stronger and less brittle.
Eating apples daily, putting some ACV into your diet also, can bring some very healthy benefits into your life as mentioned.
Just remember, it’s always best not to overdo it, and start out slowly with ACV using small amounts (1-3 teaspoons, diluted in a glass of water). And it’s best to use an unfiltered organic brand.
I welcome comments always, and if anyone has tried using ACV for health, and has had good benefits from its use, I’d love to hear about your results and what you used it for.
All best, Giulietta
Have a heathy, happy New Year’s Day and throughout all of 2024. Thanks for reading.
